Academic Mentoring Seminars

7TH GRADE

Instructor: Yue Wu

The AMS is designed to help improve the different steps within the end-to-end learning journey of the 7th grade students, from academic goal setting, to planning, execution, and refining, by leveraging different interactive modules. Students will gain practical problem-solving techniques and get better prepared for future studies.

8TH GRADE

Instructor: Eunah Kim

The AMS course for 8th graders will focus on the skills necessary for success in the academic setting to thrive in the 21st century. Topics over the 8-week course will cover self-awareness and empowerment, storytelling and self-advocacy, goal setting & development, and academic planning. Students will begin class with self-reflective analysis with different tools, and discuss their written assignments with classmates during the class through reflecting, listening, and speaking. Students should come to class prepared to analyze strategies for success as applied to daily life. Additionally, students are encouraged to implement these real-life skills and success strategies learned throughout academic coursework.

9TH GRADE

Instructor: Brittany King 

9th grade AMS is a skills-based course designed with a student-focused lens, inspiring and encouraging 21st-century students to thrive in all aspects of their schooling and beyond. Learners will discuss helpful ways to navigate challenging obstacles, such as life in a pandemic and while also embracing both social and personal experiences with a Growth mindset. In each class, students will have an opportunity to convey the concepts learned in the previous class in class discussions, written assignments, and through reflecting, listening, and speaking. Specifically, students will learn about intrinsic motivation, stereotypes, leadership, and goal setting. 

10TH GRADE

Instructor: Jacqueline Zimoch 

The goal of 10th grade AMS is to equip students with the academic and soft skills they need for success in 10th grade and beyond. As we transition to the virtual learning environment from in-person instruction, there will be an emphasis on socio-emotionally and academically relevant topics, including: an exploration of the war between Ukraine and Russia and perspectives on heroism in the conflict; summer 2022 planning, including resume writing and identification of Boston-based opportunities; everyday leadership, self-advocacy in the classroom, crafting an online brand, and career exploration. 

11TH GRADE 

Instructor: Chris Brunner 

This course is a seminar designed to guide grade 11 students through the beginning stages of the college admissions process. Through a combination of personal reflection, leaderstyle development, and planning, students will learn about the college admissions process, set goals for their own admissions timeline, and familiarize themselves with the many tools, resources, and guides that will help their own admissions experience. Students will also learn how to apply these skills to apply for a summer enrichment program and begin the college application process.

12TH GRADE 

Instructor: Prerna Subramanian

The AMS course for 12th graders will focus on the skills necessary for success in college decision-making and transition. Topics over the 8-week course will cover an array of college academic, social and interpersonal challenges and responses strategies, finalizing on a college, and building on soft-skills required for landing success internships. Students are strongly encouraged to apply assigned classwork and homework to real-life difficulties they may face in the college selection and transition process.
